HOW TO TRAVEL THERE

The ferry Speedcat I of Alpha Lines reaching the port of Poros

As there is no airport in Poros, the only way to get there from Athens, the northeastern Peloponnese or the other islands of the Saronic Gulf is by taking the ferry.

Ferry Connections

The island is well-connected to Piraeus Port, the main port of the Greek capital, as well as to the resorts of Ermioni, Porto Heli and Methana in the northeastern part of the Peloponnese in mainland Greece. Moreover, there are frequent ferry routes from nearly all the other islands of the Saronic Gulf (Aegina, Hydra and Spetses).

If you’re coming from abroad, the most convenient route is the one from Athens to Poros, as you can fly directly to the International Airport of Athens and then take the ferry from Piraeus Port, which is easily accessible via public transport. The ferry crossing is fairly short and lasts between 1 and 1.5 hours. To combine Poros with yet more enchanting destinations in the Saronic Gulf, you can consider sailing from Aegina to Poros, from Hydra to Poros, or from Spetses to Poros.

What types of ferries travel there?

Both high-speed/catamaran and conventional vessels operate routes to Poros.

The high-speed vessels operating these routes belong to Blue Star and Alpha Lines, while conventional vessels are run by Saronic Ferries.

ABOUT POROS

View over Poros from Galatas

Situated in the heart of the Saronic Gulf, Poros is actually comprised of two charming islets, the volcanic Sferia and the verdant Kalavria, which are joined by a bridge. The picturesque town of Poros sprawls amphitheatrically on the slopes of a hill and abounds in beautiful neoclassical buildings, which has led to its being declared a traditional settlement. Overall, it is a captivating island whose beauty has been praised, over the years, by such writers as the American novelist Henry Miller and the Nobel laureate George Seferis. Today, it is a popular destination for short city breaks from Athens and longer stays.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Poros is between June and August, when the weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is pleasantly warm. However, if you would rather enjoy the island’s beauties in a quieter season, we recommend going there in May or September, when the weather conditions are nearly summer-like.

Best things to do

In brief, the best things to do in Poros are to stroll around the quaint streets of Poros Town and relax on magnificent beaches such as the popular Askeli or the idyllic Love Bay. In terms of sightseeing, you can explore the ruins of the ancient Temple of Poseidon, the interesting Archaeological Museum, the Russian Dockyard and Bourtzi Fortress, which stands on a tiny islet at the entrance of Poros Port. A stroll through the delightful Lemon Tree Forest of Galatas, which lies opposite Poros, on the shores of the Peloponnese, is also a must.

Is Poros for you?

Directions

There are several ways to leave from/get to Poros Port.

Public buses operating a circular route around Poros Town are the most affordable option for those traveling on a budget, as the bus service runs for free. However, it is important to bear in mind that it is not possible to take the bus to any other locations besides the ones included in the circular route.

Compared to buses, taxis offer a faster and more flexible way to reach your destination, but it is important to take into account that they are also more costly. As the number of taxis is limited, contacting a local driver in advance to schedule a pick-up is strongly recommended.

Traveling by car is probably the best way of moving around Poros fast and comfortably, as you will be able to unlock beaches and sights that might otherwise not be accessible. If you don’t have your own vehicle, you can get one from one of the few car rental agencies that can be found near the port.

Finally, water taxis are an easy and highly enjoyable way of moving around Poros Island. From the Port of Poros, travelers can catch a taxi to the adjacent town of Galatas in the Peloponnese, as well as to many of the island’s loveliest beaches.
