Methana Ferry

Greek Tourism Awards - Silver Award

Below, you will find information about how to get to Methana, what ferries depart from there, information about the area, where to buy your tickets, and many photos.

Located in the region of Argolis, close to the enchanting islands of Aegina, Poros and Agistri, Methana is a small peninsula that has remained off the mass tourism radar. It is renowned for its active volcano and therapeutic thermal springs, which make it a great destination for alternative tourism or relaxing family holidays. Thanks to its advantageous geographical location, Methana is a great base for exploring not only the northeastern Peloponnese, but also some of the most captivating Saronic islands.

HOW TO TRAVEL THERE

The ferry Apollon Hellas of Saronic Ferrries arrives at the port of Methana

There is no airport on the Methana peninsula. The closest one is the International Airport of Athens, which is located 190 kilometers away. From there, driving to Methana is fairly easy, as this small thermal spa resort can be reached in approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Daily intercity bus (KTEL) itineraries are available as well, but the journey is not direct (changing buses at Galatas is needed).

Alternatively, it is possible to travel by ferry too, which can be much more convenient as, during the high season, a route is available on a daily basis and the ferry crossing tends to be shorter than the bus ride. Moreover, ferries offer passengers a unique opportunity to enjoy the magnificent seascape of the Saronic Gulf throughout the journey. To travel between Methana and the Saronic islands of Aegina and Poros, travelers can take the ferry from Methana Port. Alternatively, it is possible to drive to the adjacent town of Galatas and then cross over to Poros by ferry from there.

Ferry Connections

Methana is well-connected to Piraeus, the main port of the Greek capital, as well as to the enchanting islands of Aegina and Poros, which are both located close to the Methana peninsula.

The route from Athens to Methana is particularly suited for travelers who do not have their own vehicle and would rather reach their destination comfortably and without the fuss of changing buses. On the other hand, the route from Methana to Aegina is highly popular among those who would like to combine sightseeing in the northeastern Peloponnese with the beauties of the most diverse Saronic island. The route from Methana to Poros is also perfect for families seeking a tranquil seaside vacation.

What types of ferries travel there?

Both high-speed/catamaran and conventional vessels operate routes to Methana.

Besides the small town of Methana, a few more villages are scattered around the peninsula, the most impressive of them being Kameni Chora, a tiny settlement that lies right at the foot of the volcano and seems to have been hewn out of the lava. Pristine beaches where turquoise, emerald and deep blue hues create an idyllic setting also dot the shoreline of Methana, inviting visitors to swim in their crystalline waters. Thanks to its wild natural beauty, the area has emerged as a great destination for alternative tourism and various marked hiking routes are available, allowing travelers to explore this little-known yet no less captivating corner of Greece.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Methana is between June and August, when the weather is sunny and dry, and the sea is pleasantly warm. However, if you would rather go during a quieter season, we recommend going there in May or September, when the weather conditions are nearly summer-like.

Directions

There are several ways to leave from/get to Methana.

Buses (KTEL) are the most affordable option for those traveling on a budget. The central KTEL terminal is located in the settlement of Galatas, which lies around 20 kilometers from Methana, while the two are connected via a separate bus line. The Galatas bus terminal also serves frequent itineraries to/from Athens. Tickets can be purchased online or at ticket offices.

Taxis are a more flexible transportation option, but the great distances mean that they are a more expensive way of moving around. For greater convenience, contacting a local driver to schedule a pick-up or arranging a private transfer is strongly recommended.
