POPULAR FERRY ITINERARIES

The ferry Mare De Levante of Levante Ferries underneath the sunset

Kyllini is a small town that does not have an airport. Thus, the only way to get there from Athens or other locations around mainland Greece is by road. If you do not have a vehicle, you can reach Kyllini indirectly by bus. Frequent daily routes are available from Athens and Patra, while other cities that are well-connected to Kyllini include Tripoli and Kalamata in the Peloponnese. Itineraries from Ioannina and Thessaloniki in the northern part of the country are available around 3-4 times a week as well. Buses arrive at Pyrgos, the capital town of Ilia Prefecture, where you can board the local bus that goes to Kyllini.
Note: The ferry is the only way to travel between Kyllini and the Ionian islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca.

Ferry Connections

Kyllini is connected to Zakynthos and Kefalonia (Poros) on a daily basis throughout the year. The number of daily itineraries increases during the summer months, while, from mid-July to early September, an additional route is available to Pisaetos Port in Ithaca.

Thus, the most popular routes to explore the stunning natural and cultural beauties of the Ionian are from Kyllini to Zakynthos and from Kyllini to Kefalonia. However, if you would like to walk in the footsteps of the mythical Odysseus, you can choose the route from Kyllini to Ithaca.

What types of ferries travel there?

These routes are operated exclusively by conventional vessels belonging to Levante Ferries.

ABOUT KYLLINI

The ferry Mare De Levante

Inhabited since the Paleolithic era, the area of Kyllini was a significant center during the Middle Ages. Today, its port is one of the major gateways from mainland Greece to the Ionian, and more specifically to the enchanting islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Ithaca. Renowned for its thermal baths and its imposing medieval castle, it is a great destination for relaxing family holidays and a nice base for exciting road trips around the western Peloponnese. On the coasts of Kyllini, visitors will find some amazing beaches, as well as plenty of lovely taverns and resorts.

Best things to do

In brief, the best things to do are to swim in the crystalline waters of magnificent beaches such as Chrisi Akti, Arkoudi, Glyfa and Vartholomio, spend a relaxing day in Kyllini’s therapeutic thermal baths and explore the area’s fascinating monuments. More specifically, just a couple of kilometers from the port, in the picturesque semi-mountainous village of Kastro, you will find the formidable Frankish Chlemoutsi Castle, which houses an engaging permanent exhibition of over 500 pieces bringing the era of the Crusaders back to life.
Other sights to include in your to-do list are Ancient Olympia —the birthplace of the Olympic Games— and the Temple of Apollo Epicurius in the location of Figaleia. A visit to the thermal baths of Kyllini is another unique experience. You will find them just 13 kilometers from the port, in a small valley covered with sand dunes and eucalyptus trees, and, besides the spa center, the premises feature several luxury hotels. A trip to the Ionian islands of Zakynthos, Kefalonia or Ithaca is also one of the very best things to do from Kyllini.

Facts

Learn what you don't know about Kyllini!

  • Right opposite Kyllini Port lies a tiny islet known as Kafkalida, which you can easily swim to. There, you will see some ancient ruins, as well as a beautiful stone-built lighthouse guiding the ships that travel between Kyllini and Zakynthos.
  • In the 13th century, Kyllini formed part of the Principality of Achaea, hence the construction of Clermont Castle (the present-day Chlemoutsi Castle).
  • The adjacent fortified town of Glarentza (or Clarence), which was founded by the Franks in the Middle Ages, evolved into one of the most significant ports in the Mediterranean. Eventually, in 1428, it was destroyed by the Byzantine Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos, who feared it would become a hideout for pirates.
  • Close to Kyllini stands the medieval Vlacherna Monastery, where you can see not only some remarkable frescoes but also the tombs and the coats of arms of several Frankish rulers.
  • The nearby Neda Gorge, which stands out for its waterfalls and scenic lakes, is ideal for canyoning, and programs requiring no previous experience are available for the whole family.

Island-hopping: Where to go next?

Kyllini is a great base for island-hopping to some of the most enchanting destinations in the Ionian. From there, you can reach Zakynthos, world-renowned for its Shipwreck Beach and its magical Blue Caves, the mesmerizing Kefalonia and the renowned Ithaca, the home of the mythical Ulysses.

Directions

There are several ways to leave from/get to Kyllini Port.

Public buses (KTEL) are the most affordable option for those traveling on a budget. The central bus terminal for the region of Ilia is located in the town of Pyrgos, which lies approximately 47 kilometers away. The two are connected via a separate bus line. The bus stop serving routes to/from Pyrgos is situated right outside the port. As for the Pyrgos bus terminal, it is frequently connected to Athens and Patra, with a few weekly itineraries being available from Ioannina and Thessaloniki as well. The frequency depends on the destination, while tickets can be purchased either online or at ticket offices.

Taxis are an easy and flexible transportation option, but the great distances also mean that they are a much more expensive way to move around. For greater convenience, you can arrange a pre-booked private transfer by calling the local taxi services.

Finally, a couple of car rental agencies can be found in the streets around Kyllini Port. Having your own car is the best way to move around the western Peloponnese and discover beaches and sights without having to rely on the availability of bus itineraries.
